True Tones were created as a result of the industry's limitations in digitally printing solid colors. High Pressure Laminate that is commercially produced at high volumes typically utilizes the rotogravure process, which limits the customer's color options and doesn't allow for color customization. Digitally printed laminate addresses the customization needs of the customer, but is hindered by its inability to produce a solid color without inescapable printing defects. To counter this, I created an 'optical solid' that can be customized to match the customer's requested Pantone color, and possesses enough contrast to mitigate the digital printing defects while remaining subtle enough to appear optically as a true solid color.
